COLLISION AT DUNEDIN.
Dunedin, Saturday. Through refusing to answer her helm the 8,8. Wakatipu collided with the barque Laira alongside the Victoria Wharf. The collision, which occurred at 10 o'clock, was accompanied by such force that the barque had some plates stove in, and sank at her mooriugs in six minutes. The Laira b owned by Captain Paterson, and commanded by Captain Haigh. She had 1100 bales of wool aboard, and was to have left in a coup'e of days for London, via Wellington. The s.s. Wakatipu also sustained some damage. The Laira's cargo is valued 'it £15,000, and the hull at £2600. The insurances are scattered, but are expected to total the value of the cargo. The officers of the Wakatipu are rcticient as to the cause of the collision with the Laira. It is understood that in coming into the steamer's basin the Wakatipu took ground at the tail of tke bank. The engines were reversed, but this making no impression, she was put full steam ahead. The Wakatipu cleared the bank at once, and before, way could be stopped, or her course chauged, she ran into the Laira. Such is the story of some onlookers. At high water the bulwarks of the Laira were more than a foot nuclei' water.
