FIRE AT THAMES.

♦ ■ DAMAGE OVER £4OOO. (by telegraph,—own correspondent.) Thames, Last Night. The Taravu Creek Goldmining Company's battery and the residence of Mr Torrens were burned to the ground last night. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The nice working at the battery level passed the battery at 12.30 o'clock, also the men employed at the top level at 1 o'clock. Everything then appeared to b« safe. Mrs Dennerley, mother of Mr J. McLean, the mine manager, was awakened by a glare on her window and woke her son, who discovered that the battery was in flames. The fire spread rapidly, and sparks landing on the roof of a house occupied by Mr Torrens, ignited the shingles and the house was burned to the ground. Mr McLean estimates the damage roughly at about £4OOO or £SOOO. '
