PIRONGIA.

Church Service.—There was a good attendance of the parishioners of St. .Saviour's Church on Sunday morning, w hen our new vicar, the Rev. J. L. A. Kayll, preached his first sermon here. The rev. gentleman took for his text Matthew VIII. 2 and 3, and thereon delivered a most impressive extempore address, which was most attentively listened to and much appreciated. Since his arrival in the district Mr Kayll has made his beet endeavours to make the acquaintance of his scattered flock, and on Sunday give notice of his intention to visit all of them in due course as he got acquainted with his woik. Thanks.—l have been requested by Mrs George Harper, whose house was burned down a short time ago, to return her most hearty thanks to those who came to her and her daughters' assistance at the time the fire occurred ; also to the South British Fire Insurance Company, tor the piompt and liberal manner in which they stttled her claim, paying the amount in full without any deduction for the articles of furniture saved from the fire, which were valued by the local agent of the Company (Mr George Miles) at some £ls. She also thanks the latter for the trouble he took in the matter iu facilitating the prompt settlement of her loss. Pohlkn's Cask.—The verdict in the Harapipi murder case (the news being received by telegram from The Argus office) was the subject of much comment here on Saturday last, the general opinion being that Pohlcu was a very lucky man indeed in getting a verdict of "not guilty" returned by the jury who tried him. That the released man is a lunatic those who know him best deny utterly, but a man of a most ungovernable temper he is known to te. The subject principally in debate here was how long can a man be confined in a lunatic asylum for the crime Pohlen committed ? Can he be kept there when he is found by the medical authorities to have become a perfectly sane man, when of course, as lie was fouud not guilty, he will have to be released, so that more than one I heard argue he will in a short time be once more at large at his old house again and as dangerous as ever to some of his neighbours.—(Own Correspondent) -^^^^^^^^^^^^
