AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.
(BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT ) Auckland, Last Night. The City Council has sprung rather a surprise upon the Auckland ratepayers by a resolution to levy a special rate of 3.1 iu the £ : but it seems that the finances are in a very bad way. The general and special rates levied in Auckland together total 2s in the £, aud are limited by act ol Parliament to that amount. This brings in £27,600 per annum. Against this we pay £25,233, interest on loans ; £2249, sinking fund ; £1224, interest on overdraft; a total of £28,706, which more than swallows up the receipts from the rate--. This is the position before entering into the management of the city's affairs, maintenance of streets, parks, public baths, abbatoirs, fire brigades, payment of off L-e expenses aud salaries and contribution to charitable aid. All these items require some £27,000 to meet them. When the whole income is reckoned up and supplemented by £BOOO. by which revenue from water exceeds the expenses connected with the supply, the balance is still very conspicuously on the wrong side of the account, and quite justifies the statement that we are going to the bad at the rate of £SOOO a year.
