KING COUNTRY.
Stoppage of Road Wokks.—All the men working on the Auckland ends of the Ohura-Stratford and Te Kuiti-Awa-kino roads received last week the unpleasant news that work was to be discontinued, the only exceptions being the sawycis and a few spec : al settlers on tha Awakinoroad. The men are not long back f r om town from their Christmas holidays, and of course came back after the manner of their class without a shilling in their pockets, and most have only had two or three weeks' woik. If a private contractor treated his men in this way, what a howl there would be. Hon. John McKenzie.— Mr Cadman mentioned when in Te Kuiti a few days ago that as soon as Mr McKenzie had recovered sufficiently, he proposed to visit this district and see it for himself, and would then decide which parts and also in what form it would be best to place it on the market, and that it was intended to carry out the promise midc in the Public Works Statement, and open the district for settlement shortly. We only hope it is true, but " hope deferred maketh the heart sick." New Telegraph Link to the South. —Last Thursday Mr Bold and two other high officials of the Telegraph Department arrived at Te Kuiti by train with their horses, etc., from Auckland, and are now engaged inspecting the liue of the Te Kuiti-Awakino-Waitara road as to its suitability for the proposed alternative line to the south. It is hoped that their visit meaos an early start with this important woik. Rams.—A truck containing sixty-five rams, bred by Mr C. J. Storey, passed up by train to-day on their way to Mr J. W. Ellis' property at Puketiti. I hear Mr Ellis has a fine mob of 3000 ewes on the road from Hawke's Bay, and expected in a few days.—(Own Correspondent).
