Four Washington belles, daughters of distinguished Government officials, have committed suicide within a month.
Captain John F. Parry has been appointed Commander of H.M.S. Dart, a "snrveying vessel on the Australian Station.
A German Socialist obtained possession of, and published a Ministerial circular issued to the Federal Government, suggesting the enactment nf a stringent law to prevent intimidation on the part of trade unionists. Count Von Posadowsky TVelmer, Financial Secretary of State, strongly condemned as an official breach of trust the means by which the Socialist was enabled to publish the circular.
Lieutenant - General Kouropatkine, Governor of the Trans-Caspian Territory, has succeeded General Vannoenaky as Russian Minister of War.
The Court of Appeal has given a dcci eion in the case of the Queensland National Bank v. the P. and 0. Co. This was an action in which the bank sought to recover from the defendant company damages for the loss of £SOOO in sovereigns stolen from the steamer Oceana in transit from Sydney. The Court dismissed the defendant's appeal. In the civil action brought by Mr Jay, n noney-lender, to recover several thousand pounds from Sir Tatton Sykes on promiesory notes alleged to have been sigucd by Sir TattoD, the jury found that Sir Tatton did not sign the notes, and gave a verdict in his favour. The documents were impounded; Serious anti-Semitic demonstrations have occurred in Paris. Mobs marched through the streets shouting " Death to the Jews." Great disturbances occurred in the Latin Quarter. Anarchists fought in favour of the Jews. Many arrests were effected. The directors of the Union Bank of Australia have decided to pay a dividend at the rate of 5 per cent, per annum. The death is announced of Signor Nicoliri, husband of Madame Patti.
