DR. ORPEN.
ARRESTED IN SAN'FRANCISCO
(by telegraph.—own correspondent). Auckland, Last Night. A cablegram has been received by the Commissioner of Police from the ConsulGeneral at San Fr&ncisco that Dr. Orpen was arrested there on the 19th inst. Detective Madden leaves with the extradition papers for San Francisco tomorrow.
The Auckland detectives have in their possession the instruments, books-, private d'ary and other things left by Dr. Orpen in his office ; they also have the key of his office.
The information laid against Dr. Orpen is that on the 251 h December, 1897, he at Auckland did kill and murder one Susan Harriett Campbell McCallum. The information was laid by Sergeaut Kelly, and the extradition warrant was issued by Mr Brabant, S.M., on depositions taken before him.
Detective Madden, who leaves with the extradition papers, is acknowledged to be one of the smartest detectives in the New Zealand force. He will have charge of Dr. Orpen on the voyage back.
