ENGLAND V. AUSTRALIA. The Colonials' first innings closed for the splendid total of 573 runs. Trumble making 37 (uot out) and Howell 16. The Englishmen responded with 278, and having to follow on had at the conclusion of play on Tuesday put together 161 for the loss of four wickets. Maolaren, not out 70 Mason, c Jones, b Noble 0 Ranj tsinhji, c Trumble, b Mel eod... 77 Hayward, o and b McLeod 1 Storer, c Hill, b McLeod 6 Druce, not out 0 Extras 7 Total for four wickets 161 In the second innings Ranjitsinhji was batting two hours and a-half, and afier the first few minutes his batting was in his best form. He hit eight, fours. "When he had made 19 he gave a chance to Darling, which was not accepted. Maclaren played a great innings. He was in three hours and twenty minutes, and alter the first two difficult chances to the bowlers he did not make a mistake. He hit five fours. The Australians fielded brilliantly, apart from Darling's mistake in missing the Indian Prince at 16. Iredale, Jones and Gregory were very smart. Tbey were unfortuuate in respect to bowling, as Jones, owing to his injured shoulder, could not bowl at all. Intense disappointment is expressed in England at the poor siand made by the Englishmen in the third test match. The newspapers refer to the batting aa a wretched display and the score as paltry. The first test match resulted in a victory for the Englishmen by ten wickets, and the second for the Colonials by an innings and 55 runs.
