The Englishmen responded with 278, and having to follow on had at the conclusion of play on Tuesday put together 161 for the loss of four wickets. He hit eight, fours. "When he had made 19 he gave a chance to Darling, which was not accepted. Maclaren played a great innings. The first test match resulted in a victory for the Englishmen by ten wickets, and the second for the Colonials by an innings and 55 runs.
