SUPPOSED DROWNING
(by TELEGRAPH.—OWN correspondent). Westpurt, Last Night. Considerable sensation was caused in town yesterday by the report of a case of drowning in the Buller River, and there seems too muck reason to fear that a well-known public man, Michael Flanaghan, of Cromwell, near Charleston, lost his life. About one o'clock yesterday, the Hosamond's watchman, Mr R. Lewis, was passing along the deck near the lower platform of the coal hatch, anil saw Flanaghan Fitting in a dangerous position. The watchman gave warning, but Flauaghan replied he was iu no more danger than Lewis wa«. The latter then turned away, and was on the poiut of coining up the gangway, when he heard a loud splash as if caused by a heavy body falling into the water. Upon investigating the matter, Lewis cou'd find no trace of Flanaghan, but saw his dog on the platform. Flanaghan hud been enva«ed in mining in the Charleston district for many years, but for five years past has been living on his means. He has filled many public positions in Charleston.
