London, January 12. THE British squadron, with the exception of H.M.S. Powerful, which recently arrived at Port Chemulpo, the capital of Corea, to prevent the dismissal of Mr McLcavy Brown, British Superintendent of Custoras.whohasleft that port, and is returning to Hongkong. The Powerful will remain at Chemulpo for tho present to safeguard British interests in the Far East. _, Sir Matthew Ridley, Home Secretary, speaking at Fleetwood, stated that tho British policy as regards China was to watch and wait. Her superior navy gave her the key to the situation. The Continental papers are pleased with the moderation of Mr Balfour's references to China. The Berlin Post states that the British Government was sounded upon the question of the German occupation of Kiao-chou, and it had no objection to the course taken by Germany.
