RAGLAN ANNUAL SPORTS.
Okfickrs.—President: Mr It. 0. Mathias. Judge: Mr W. I. Conrodi. Handicappers : Messrs A. Jerome and W. Morgan. Starter: Mr J. Dalv. Secretary: Mr 8. Foss. Committee: Messrs Black, Schnackenbcrg, Litchfield, Rowlands, C. E. Houchen and C. Matthews. These sports, which were held on Fi iday, December 31st, the last day of the old year, under tho auspices of the Raglan Athletic Association, came off vc.y successfully. There was a large gathering from all parts of the district, besides visitors at present staying here. The day was fine, but a strong southwest wind prevailed. The various events were well contested, and great interest wis evidently taken in them, especially in the aquatic events, the chief of which was the yacht race. The following were the events and the results : 100 Yards Handicap. First prize, £1 ; second, 7s 6d.—Bore Edwards, 1 ; F. Moon, 2. Five entered for this event, and the race was a good one. Boys' Race, under 14 years ; 100 yards handicap. First prize, 10s ; second, 2s 6d.—A. Taylor, 1 J McClean (native), 2. High Jump. First prize, £1 ; second, 7s 6d.—Pukawa, 1 ; Shaw, 2. 220 Yards Handicap First prize, £1 10s ; second, 10s.--F. Moon, 1; Parkes, 2. Stockmen's Race. Sweepstake of 2s Cd ; added money, 203.—Joyce, 1. 220 Yards Handicap. First prize, £1 10s ; second, 10s.—R. Miller, 1; Shaw, 2. Ore Mile Race. First prize, £1 ss; second, 55.-A. Mold, 1 ; Shaw, 2. AQUATIC EVENTS. The fiv.i items on this portion of the programme took place in the afternoon, about high water. There was a nice fresh wind blowing, though not nearly so strong as in the morning. A large concourse of people assembled at the old wharf and all along the cliff tide to witness the several cents. The first event was the Yacht Race. Three yachts competed, viz , Mr J. K. McDonald's Watcrwitch, Messrs Foss and Vercoe's Kaingaru, Mr Sehnackcnberg's Karcwa. Course : From the old wharf round the bury beyond the new wharf at Kiwi's Point, round the buoy opposite Kopua, and back to the old wharf. This race, which may be said to have been tho chief event of the day, was watched with great interest, and great excitement was exhibited from start to finish. The Water Witch led from the start and proved an easy victor, the second to arrive being the Eaogaru. On j assing the old wharf hearty cheers greeted the owner and sailing master of the winning boat. Four-oared boat race. First prize, £2 ; second, £l. Course, from old wharf round buoy at Joy's Point, oppos:te Nihi Nihl—C. Matthew's boat, 1 ; S. Vercoe's boat, 2. Pair oircd boat race. First prize, 303; second, 10*,— Johnstone Bros., 1 ; Vercoe, 2. Open sailing boat (sweep). First prize, £2 103 ; second, £l.—C. Mathews and R. Gal van's boats dead heat. (Stakes divided). Greasy boom.—The efforts of the various competitors in this amusing event caused considerable amusement. The winner proved to be a native named Toni.
