CABLE SUMMARY.
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have advised the clergy to use their influence both with employers and employed to act forbearingly, and in a spirit of brotherhood. In connection with the present labour troublas th';y suggest the offering of special prayers in the churches. The late Mr Alfred Noble left £134,000 to provide for the awarding of five annual prizes to students and inventors who shall be adjudged to have done most for the benefit of humanity. A disastrous conflagration has occurred at Port-au-Prince Hayti, by which 800 houses were destroyed and 3000 persona were rendered homeless. The fire was followed by a shock of earthquake. The Times states that Lord Salisbury is favourably considering the proposed Antarctic expedition under the auspices of the Rojal Geographical Society. The Foreign Ambassadors hare informed the Porte that the proposal to send 5000 troops to Crete to relieve the Turkish garrison is inopportune, and would produce complications. Tho Porte's request has accordingly been refused. French reports confirm tho seizure by a French expedition of Fashoda, on the White Nile. Tho British Government at the time the seizure was reported intimated to France that it would be considered a decidedly unfriendly act. At tho Sculling Carnival on the Tyno, J. "White won the Christmas Handicap, defeating James Wray, of New South Wales, who conceded him 17 seconds start. George Towns, the Australian, competed in the semifinal, but was defeated early in his heat., Tho Panama Canal frauds trial has concluded. All the defendants were acquitted. The inquiry into the recent groat London fire has concluded. An open verdict was returned. The Porte has promised shortly to pay Russia half a million pounds, arrears; of the Russo-Turkisb War indemnity. The Rev. Mr Duff, of St. George's, Glasgow, will be the delegate Free Church of Scotland at the jubilee"" celebration of the Otago Presbyterian Church.
