Lady Scott, who in January last was smteucod to eight months' imprisonment for criminally libelling hsr son-in-law (Lord Russell) has been released. Tho Judicial Committee of the Privy Council has rejected Mrs Carew's application for leavs to appeal against the sentence passed upon her by the Court at Yokohama, in Japan. Mrs Carew in February last was sentenced to death for the murder of her husband by poisoning at Yokohama, the sentence being afterwards commuted to penal servitude for life.' Butler was executed in Sydney on Friday. He is reported to have confessed to murdering Preston, Wellar and Ilurgess. He admitted that his sentence was just. Dr. Andree started on his balloon voynge to the North Pole on the 11th inst., ascending from Dane's Island under favourable conditions. The balloon when last seen was travelling at the rate of 22 miles an hour in a north-east direction. The distance from the island to the North Pole is 617 miles.

Dewbyshire won, Tyers. the present holder of the championship, being second ; Percy Cavill, of Sydney, was beaten by 14 yards.
