CARLE SUMMARY.
The number of natives employed on relief works in India is 3,-181,000. China is making arrangements with a British syndicate for a loan of six teen million pounds. The Orange Free States Government has, it is stated, informed President Kruger that he must not look to the Republic to support the Trausvsnl in the event of hostilities, consequent on breaches of the Loudon Convention. Advices received from Sir W. E. Maxwell, Governor of the Gold Coast Coloney, state that Samory is well treating Lieutenant Henderson and the members of his party whom ho holds prisoners. It is supposed that Henderson's Houssa escort deserted when attacked by Samory's force. The action for divorce brought by Mrs Laugtry, the famous actress, in the Californian courts has proved successful. The petition for divorce was granted on the grounds of desertion and want of maintenance.
Arrangements have been made by the Rev. Mr Mansfield, of the Nonconformist College, Oxford, for the Rev. Dr. Bovan, of Melbourne, who is at present visiting England, to act for a term as collegiate preacher. Dr. Bevan also preaches the Jubilee sermon at Glasgow. The death is announced of Mr Charles Ryley, the well-known operatic singer, who recently burst a blood vessel. The Belfast Chamber of Commerce has asked tho Government to test the possibility of constructing a tunnel between Ireland and Scotland.
The Czar, writing to M. Faure, condoling with tho French nation on the charity bazaar disaster, referred to the President as bis " very dear and great friend." As part of the Diamond Jubilee programme the Queen will review ten thousand school children at Constitution Hill.
Tbe British Empire League has made tbe following provisions for the visit of the Colonial Premiers to the provinces:—June 12, the Mayor of Liverpool officially receives them, and tho Chamber of Commerce entertains them at a banquet; Juno 13, Lord Crewe entertains ; June 14, the Provost of Edinburgh receives; Juno 10, tbe Muuicipal Council of Glasgow entertains; June 1(3, the Mayor of Manchester gives a banquet; June 1!>, the Prince and Princess Christian entertain the visitors at a garden paity at Virginia "Water; June 27, the Duke of Devonshire entertains the Premiers at a garden party ; July 3, tbe Earl and Countess of Jersey entertain ; July o, the Premiers attend the League meetings in London, the Duke of Devonshire presiding.
