A DETERMINED SUICIDE.
«. A PRISONER HANGS HIMSELF. (BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT). Auckland, Last Night. A successful attempt at suicide was made this morning on board the Clansman, while on the way to Auckland from Russell. Constable Dunne was bringing a man, named Mark Bionovich, suppo.*ed to be an Austrian,to town to stand his trial on a charge of attempted rape at Mongonui. Bionovich was locked by himself in the ladies' steerage cabin, and when the aonstablc looked in about 10 o'clock last night the prisoner was asleep. About 4 o'clock this morning the cook was awakened by the prisoner groanirjg and cursing, hut he took no notice, and went to sleep again. An hour later Constable Dunne, on going to the cabin was horrified, to find him hanging dead. The man tied together a number of straps, which he tore ofF the lifebelts in the cibiu, and hanged or rather strangled himself with these. The roof of the cabin is so low that his koees were almost touching the ground.
