THE CRETAN CRISIS.
«. Athens, February 17. Colonel Vassos, the Greek Commander, in his proclamation, demanding the surrender of Canea said he was bringing peace and the rule of law to Crete, and he intended to occupy the island in the name of Greece, and promised, in the event of no opposition being made, to respect the life and property of the inhabitants, as well as their freedom and their religion. Colonel Vassos captured Fort Agina, killing many Mussulmen defenders, and taking prisoners one hundred Turkish soldiers. In reply to the protest made by the Powers, Colonel Vassos declared that he intended to execute bis mission. The Powers have directed the Greek flotilla to withdraw from Crete. The combined foreign fleets have informed the Greek Consul that any attack on the towns occupied by tne mixed forces will be repelled. The Greek Government has instructed Colonel Vassos not to attack Canea, or to come into collision with the Powers in any way. Constantinople, February 17. The Sultan has ordered military measures to be taken on the Greek frontier, and is also calling out further regiments of Redifs, or militia. Tho operations on the Greek frontier are being conducted under Commander Edhein Pasha. Turkey has decided to leave the Powers to pacify Creto, while Karatheodory Pasha, formerly Governor of Crate, has been sent to represent Turkish Imperial interests there.
