TRILBY.
Ivo book that has been launched upon the waves of public opinion of late years has had such a phenomenal run as " Trilhy." The sensation caused by the reading of Du Maimer's masterpiece has only been equalled by the dramatisation of the fascinating story. The advent of a strong company billed to produce the famous play in Hamilton naturally caused a thrill of interest, and notwithstanding the wretched state of the weather the curtain rose to a good house. The cast of characters was a powerful one, and the name part, at the hands of Aliss Idrene Thornton, received a faithful interpretation. Svengali gave Mr Collett Dobson unlimited scope for his undoubted histrionic powers, end the old Waikato favourite ably sustained his reputation. Mr Ernest Brinkim-.n took the part of " 'lafly ' : in a creditable manner, ami his singing of "' The Storm Fiend," >n the first scene, laid in the studio, Latin Quarter Paris, evoked prolonged applause. The other characters wore taken as follows :—" The Laird." Mr Chas. R. Hill ; " Little Billee," Mr Chas. King ; " Gecko," Mr A. Calvert Chadwiek ; " Rev. Thomas Bagot," Mr YV*. Markhorn," " Mrs Rau»ot," Miss Any Rowes." The only objection to the whole show was the length of the in tervals, otherwise interest was sustained throughout the piece. The performers were frequently applauded, most of the plaudits, however, falling to Mi*s Idrene Thornton, who sang " Ben Bolt " in a yhanning manner during the third act.
