AN APPEAL FOR HELP. Calcutta, January 27. It is reported that great distress exists in Bijapur, a city in the Bombay district, and that the resources of the authorities are taxed to their utmost to meet the necessities of the people. At the request of Sir F. W. McLean, Chief Justice, Bengal, and the Chairman of the Famine Belie f Committee, the following appeal is being circulated through Renter's agency, which is acting gratuitously iti the matter, to the Governors of the Australasian colonies and Mayors of the principal towns. The messugo is also franked by the Now Zealand Telegraph Department to a large number of Mayors in that colony : —Calcutta, January 2b'. The Central Committee of the Indian famine fund, whose headquarters arc; at Calcutta, earnestly solicit your cordial co-opera-tion in taking steps towards the alleviation of the existing distress. There is the highest possible scope for the private relief which has already been established. Tho area of the famine - stricken provinces aud the number of persons afflicted are enormous. Tho distress is rapidly increasing, and we feel sure the unavoidable privations from which millions of industrious poor are now suffering will arouse profound sympathy amongst all classes and all nations. The committee, therefore, make an urgeut appeal to you to organise an Indian famine relief fund, and will be deeply grateful for contributions, which will be publicly acknowledged.
