MATABELE WAR.
Capetown, November 2S. CiIICKAGUA has yielded, thus putting an end to the Matabelehmd campaign. The laager at Fort Salisbury is dispersing and the troops are being disbanded. Many people, however, consider the peace is only temporary. Earl Grey intends to largely restore the Indunas' authority under native Commissioners, and permit them to govern their old tribal districts. The Indunas are to be held responsible for the conduct of the tribes.
There arc grave prospects of famine. The South Africa Chartered Company has been supplying food for 40,000 natives for three months. The latter speak in' the highest terms of Mr Crcil Bbcdes and his immense services and liberality. The rinderpest will make the year 1597 one of privation and high prices. Enormous claims for compensation have been sent iu, many of them being fraudulent.
