TE AWAMUTU.
«. Focr.AJj.—The fifth social in connection with St. John's Anglican Church, was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening last, and was a great success. The lovely moonlight night, together with the object to which the funds wore devoted, viz., obtaining new matting for the church, no doubt added even more to its success, the proceeds being far above the amount re quired. Our worthy Vicar, the Rev \V. H. Wilson, has worked most energetically to make these socials a success, and there is not the slightest doubt but he has succeeded in doing so. An excellent programme was prepared, and was rendered more attractive by the assistance of Mrs Whitakcr and Mr Gribble, who came over from Hamilton for the occasion, their songs being greatly appreciated. The following programme was gone through:—Song, Mr Roberts; •song, " For the Children's Sake," Mrs Whitaker ; duet, "I Don't Want to Play in Your Yard," Misses N. and A. Ahier. This item was performed by Mr Geo. Ahicr's two little girls, and was among some of the best on the programme, and took immensely. Piano solo, Miss Florrie Maudeno ; song, "Jessie's Dream,''. Miss Chalmers ; duct, " Memories of Home," Mrs Whitaker ami Mr Gribble ; song, " Sweet Marie," MrDeaville ;eon«, "The Distant Shore," Mr Gribble ; song, "Bid Mc to Love," Mrs Whitaker ; song, " The River of Years," Mr Marshall. Miss Mitchell kindly played the accompaniments. During the course of the evening the Vicar alluded in a few suitable words -to the departure of Mr Geo. Cruiekshank (one of the vestry) for Coromandel, and wished him God speed in his new venture, and called upon the audience lo give three hearty cheers. Refreshments were provided by the lady workers-of the church,- and were handed around at intervals during the evening. Draikaok District.—The first meeting of the newly-formed Mangaboi Land Drainage Board was held in MrCruickshank's office on Wednesday last, at 3 p.m. All the members, with the exception of one, were present. Mr Cruiekshank, the solicitor to the Board, explained the course to be taken in the ma;ter. After a short discussion, Mr John Hutchinson, of Orakau, was unanimously elected cliaii man. Mr 11. Roche, of Ohaupo, was appointed to examine and report upon all the properties affected by the river and to classify them accordingly, the report to be sent" in by the 11th September. Diu-AimiKE.--Mr Ceo. Cruiekshank, who has been practising as a solicitor at U'e AwamutU lor cue past six years, and who has opened an office at Coromandel, left here on Thursday last to enter upon his new duties. A large number of lis old friends assembled at the railway station to sec him off. Mr Uriiicksliank, by his courtesy and attention in connection with bis profession, gained the confidence of the whole district, and I am sure we all wish him every success in his new sphere.—(Own Correspondent.)
