HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the ordinary meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council, held on Tuesday evening, there were present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Hey), and Crs. Salmon, Unpin, Salde, Gwynne, Davis, Bettley and Sandes. Whatawhata Swamp Road. The Waipa County Council wrote informing the Council that they had written to the Minister for Lands, requesting a grant of money towards the completion and maintenance of the Whatawhata Swamp Road, and asking for their support in the matter. —The Mayor mwved that the clerk be instructed to- write to the Minister for Lands, supporting the application of the Waipa County Council. ■ — This was seconded by Cr. Slade and carried. Gum Trees. : —Mr Jos. Hinton, senr., asked for permission to cut down the gum trees along the gravel pit near the Council Chambers,—The letter was received. Gate. —"Mr W. Manktelow wrote reporting that Fox-street was not yet open, and that the gate had not yet been removed.—'Cr. Tippm said he had interviewed Mr Bunting re the matter, and he thought that gentleman was perfectly willing to comply with the wishes of the Council. The road was practically open. Cr. Salmon thought that Mr Bunting’s attention should again be called to the matter. —After a little discussion the letter was received. - Advertising. —Mr G. Edgecumbe notified the Council that he had ceased to publish the Waikato Times, and commenced to publish a new paper, entitled The Waikato Argus, and solicited a continuance of the Council s advertising and job printing Cr, Slade moved and Cr. Davis seconded, that Mr Edgeeumbe’s request bo acceded -tic—■WT'‘“EofHey “ moved an amendment that as a new paper was likely to start in the district an equal share should Jbe given to each. The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder, and the motion was carried, Cr. Bettley alone dissenting. Auctioneers’ Fees. —The Council’s solicitor, Mr A. Swarbrick, stated that he had just received notice that the Waipa County Council intended to appeal against the decision given by Capf. Jackson in the cash Hamilton Borough Council v. Waipa County Council, claim £IBO, heard at the S.M. Court, Hamilton, at the last sitting of ithe court, and advised the Council to defend the action. Cr. Gwynne moved, and Cr. Salmon seconded, that Mr Swarbrick should be instructed to defend the action in the Appeal Court. — Carried unanimously. Expenses.— Mr Swarbrick also forwarded an account amounting to £36 9s 5s for expenses, etc. It was decided to pay the amount and also a furtuer sum of £lO for witnesses expenses Foreman’s Report.— The Foreman of Works report of the works executed since last meeting was received and adopted. Poundkeeper’s Report.— The poundkeepers report showing the amount of pounding fees received as £3 los 6d was received and adopted. Accounts. —The following payments were authorised ;—Hamilton Gas Co., £ls Gs 6d : T. W. Maunder, £4 9s ; John Parr, £1 Ss; Carder Bros., £l4 Is 6d ; W. H. Kelly, £1 17s ; W. Andrews, 6s; J. Hinton, 10s • A. Swarbrick, £36 9s 5d ; Municipal Association, £4 4s. Gas. —The gas account attracted a lively attention. Cr. Tiepin asked the difference in the cost of lighting at present as compared with the old style.— The Clerk replied that they had nearly double the number of lamps and the cost was about double. —Cr. Sandes said on the average one week out of every four the lamps were not lit.—Cr. Gwynne said according to the present arrangement on some moonlight nights the lamps were lit, while on other moonlight wet dark nights not a single light was visible. The manager, Mr Atkinson, had suggested that the lighting be left to his discretion, and he (Cr. Gwynne) thought that such an arrangement would be much more satisfactory. —It was eventually agreed to allow the' matter to stand over for a while. Rate. — It was decided to strike a rate of Is in the £ on all rateable property wihin the Borough, Mb Davey’s Contribution. —The Clerk stated that Mr Davey was quite prepared to pay his contribution towards the work at Gibbon’s Creek, if the conditions under which the promise was made had been fulfilled. The clerk was instructed to render a statement showing the detailed expenditure for Mr DaAey’s consideration.
