RAETIHI FIRES
" It is freely admitted that Raetihi, on Monday afternoon (February 10 1908) had a narrow escape from being partly of wholly demolished by the burn in the paddocks adjoining the western end of the township and only a kindly wind prevented a lively scene of fire-fighting to be witnessed. The sections right up to Duncan Street were ablaze by noon with a strong breeze wafting sparks towards the first shop in the block. Duncan Street was made a fighting line and, through the forethought of a number of residents, a (water) tank was placed on the road and filled from the Makotuku Stream. A number of mert with buckets at hand watched the proceedings during the afternoon on behalf of the town. Other anxious householders filled buckets and tubs with water and placed them in readiness for any sudden attack. Father Maillard's cottage had a very narrow escape it being surrounded all the afternoon but, ow-
ing to the efforts of a number of fire-fighters, the building is still standing. Fortunately the breeze moderated in the afternoon. One or two residents kept vigil up till midnight on Monday but no further trouble was experienced the wind having died down. As there are fires burning at all points around the township a strong wind is liable to renew the danger at any time. A good fall of rain just now would receive a hearty welcome."
