Lights glitch at Waiouru

An "administrative glitch" has been blamed for Waiouru's street lighting problems over recent months. ATG Commander Col Brett Bestic told the Waiouru Community Advisory Committee last week that the old Ministry of Works organisation carried out a number of routine maintenance tasks around the camp. He said with the change of the MoW to a state

owned enterprise (Works & Development Services Corporation) and the change in approach from the Army to take greater control over expenditure, a lot of routine checks were cancelled. "One of those automatic things that was cancelled was a six to eight weekly check on street lighting," said Col Bestic. "We overlooked it, the Ministry of Works (Works Corporation) forgot about

it because they had been told to and so the quality of street lighting deteriorated," said Col Bestic. He said a routine check system had now been put back in place. "I might add, the irritation ... is that this is exactly the sort of thing our rates should be paying for, not the Army," said Col Bestic. He said it was a matter the Army would be taking up with the Rangitikei County Council.
