Boundaries doubt

The boundaries of the Waiouru Ward of the new Ruapehu District are not yet clear, the Waiouru Community Advisory Committee heard last week.

Waimarino Mayor Garrick Workman told the committee the Local Government Commission had not yet released maps of the districts and regions. "In regard to Irirangi the scheme states that all the defence land within Waiouru camp will be within the Ruapehu District," said Mayor Workman. "So I would take that to mean Ruapehu includes Irirangi." Chairman of the WCAC Colonel Bestic said there would be difficulties with defining defence land. "The definition of defence land may not be as crystal clear as they (the Commission) think it is," said Col Bestic. "Does it include land that is under 99 year lease, for example." Mayor Workman said the Commission states that the district will include "all the Defence land associated with the Waiouru Camp." Colonel Bestic said that would mean a substantial increase in the land area of the Waiouru Ward. "For example, looking at the maps in the newspapers, they don't appear to have taken into account that the Army training area also overlaps into Taupo," said Col Bestic. He said the eastern boundary also appeared to be inaccurate. Col Bestic also

raised the point of catchment boundaries. "For example is the Moawhango now a tributary of Lake Taupo now that it goes through the tunnel and is the reservoir a lake?" said Col Bestic.
