3rd stock company keen to use saleyards

In reply to your article regarding the local Saleyards we would like to make these comments.

The two national companies are blaming private operators for the downturn in numbers at local saies. Waimarino Livestock Ltd is the only other company in the area so it seems it is all our

fault. We are a fully registered company offering clients a complete service, at cheaper rates. We first applied to participate in the yards in November 1988, of-

fering to pay Associated Auctioneers on a headage basis for all stock sold. Our offer was refused and we were told the only way we could participate was to buy a third share of the sale-

yards at current valuation and be responsible for a third share of all running costs. The purchase price asked is many thousands of dollars and we feel that is an unfair burden on a company of our size.

The two national companies acquired their shares of the saleyards through a series of mergers and takeovers. We have no other choice than to sell stock in the paddock and will continue to do so until something is resolved. Recently there was a

sale advertised at Raetihi for Thursday January 12. Both national companies sent stock to the Fordell Sale earlier the same week. If that is their way of supporting the Raetihi Saleyards, buying a third share would not be a very viable operation.

We definitely support selling stock by auction and realise only too well thc value of the saleyards to the Waimarino district. We are here to stay and provide the district with a personal service.
