KAIMANAWA RESEARCH
Research on the natural systems in the Kaimanawa Forest Park is needed for effective management of natural resources, according to park staff. Targeted for research are the blue duck (whio), powelliphanta snails and native bats, as well as the Kaimanawa wild horses which were the subject of an article in the recently released first issue of the New Zealand Geographic. More needs to be known about the population and conservation status of the brown kiwi after several sightings of the birds. Yet another subject for research is revegetation and animal influences on forest recovery in areas of cyclone damage. Also, park resource users, their needs and wishes, shifting patterns of park use and the impact of users on the park facilities should be looked at. Research into these areas will be carried out subject to funding.
