"BE PREPARED" SAYS DOC
An incident on Ngauruhoe with an exhausted tramper has underlined the need for trampers to be adequately prepared for their back-country activities. Department of Conservation staff had to provide assistance to a group climbing on Mt Ngauruhoe after one of the party became exhausted through lack of food. The DoC staff spent a night with the group until he regained his strength. Senior Conservation officer Graeme Ayres has said that DoC can not afford to "nursemaid" people who get into difficulties because of not eating and drinking properly or because they are not properly equipped. He said such situations Could easily be avoided if basic tramping rules where followed. Staff time spent on such missions was paid for from track or hut maintenance budgets.
