WANGANUI RIVER FLOWS FLUCTUATE
A feature of canoeing the Wanganui River over the Christmas Break has been large fluctuations in water levels. Pipiriki conservation officer Dennis McDonnell has said late afternoon thunderstorms over the break preceded rises in the river level at Pipiriki by up to a metre overnight. Canoeing the river over the holiday was popular with about 200 canoeists on the river. The river level fluctuations caused some problems but Mr McDonnell said most realized the levels weren't constant and took precautions, though one canoeist was reported as having lost his canoe. He hadn't pulled his canoe high enough and found it had floated away the next morning. Luckily Mr McDonnell found the canoe for him.
