Peace Villains
If your correspondent Robert Milne is confused as to why Greenpeace, rather than the French were villains in the Rainbow Warrior Affair, might I suggest he reads Lord Montgomery's memoirs. - copy in Ohakune Library. Waimarino residents who heard the Field Marshall address pupils of Ohakune Secondary School in May 1946 would know of the Chain of Defence being set up around the World. Monty told us i n Britain in 1948 that Australia is New Zealand's ally to the West France to the East. Is it not a tribute to the 40 year success of this arrangement that most Kiwis are entirely unaware of it? The choice of weapons was to be left to each country concerned but it may behove us to remember that the most birdbrained of sittings ducks invariably has a mate on watch.
