Much to be thankful for despite gloom
Well 1988 was certainly an eventful year.
No doubt many of us have been affected in some way by the winds of change that have blown, at gale force it seems, through almost every aspect of life as we know it right around the country. Here in the Waimarino we are not immune to this change, nor the uncertainty created by it. As a rural area we have taken our fair share of the knocks and, naturally, negative attitudes and feelings develop. These tend to make it difficult for us to appreciate the fact that while the grass may look green over the fence there are many others who are far worse off. I guess what I am trying to say is that despite the doom and gloom we have a lot to be thankful for. Looking on the positive side most Wamarino residents are able to lead comfortable lives. Social problems while of concern, are not a ma-
jor threat to our lifestyle. We are fortunate that we do not have too many unemployed, and as a consequence violent crime is the exception rather than the rule. We have very good health, recreational, educational and social services available to us. More importantly we have many Waimarino residents who are prepared to contribute a great deal of these activities that are so important in any society and I thank them sincerely for their efforts. As this year draws to a close it is perhaps timely to reflect on how we are coping with all these changes that have occurred in our times and resolve to take as positive an approach to life as we can in 1989. .This definitely applies in Local Government circles at present, for it appears almost certain Waimarino will
combine with the two Taumaranui Authorities and Waiouru to form The Ruapehu District Council. It has been my privilege to have served as Mayor of the Waimarino District this year. It has been a challenging, at times difficult, yet rewarding experience that has been made easier than originally expected by the determination of the council and most of the staff to truly amalgamate. Again positive attitudes prevailed and positive attitudes must continue to prevail if the Ruapehu District Council is to be as successful. And now to Christmas. It will be great to take a breather and join with family and friends and let the Christmas sprit flow. In closing may I, on behalf of my wife M a u reen and the Workman family, wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.
