Waiouru street lighting 'gone crazy'

Waiouru's street lighting was criticized at the last Waiouru Community Advisory Committee meeting. Major John McLeod told the meeting that there were major problems with the switching mechanism, which had "gone crazy" and that was causing the problems. Some lights never come on and others stay on all day and go off at night, the committee heard. The problem had been going on for about eight weeks, they were also told. Murray Fitchett, o f Thornton Terrace, said the power board had told him they weren't aware of the night time problem, just that some lights were staying on during the day. He said the problem varied between streets on different nights. "I reckon someone didn't pay the power bill," he joked. "I must say this is a classic case of what makes me angry about the whole issue of rates," said Chairman Bestic. "If there is anything that is a county council problem it is street lighting and if we wrote to the council I know exactly what they'd say - 'that's an Army problem'." "It is a first class case of the sort of neglect Waiouru has put up with these last thirty years," said the chairman.
