HUT FEES SYSTEM COULD LEAD TO S&R PROBLEMS
The Department of Conservation's new hut fees system could hinder search and rescue operations, according to some tramping clubs and search and rescue volunteers. They say because it will be an honesty system people will be less likely to write their intentions in the hut log books, information that helps greatly in search and rescue operations. A Levin based search and rescue adviser, Don Pigott, has said if trampers stop using the log books search and rescue costs could be greatly increased.
