Junior College students spend time outdoors
More than 130 junior students spent time out of the classroom, gaining experience in a wide range of outdoor activities and other enterprises last week. The students were taking part in Ruapehu College's Activities Week, run f r o m November 28 to December 2.
The activities ranged from mountaineering skills to golf and computing, from surfboarding to drama and joumalism. Two groups have travelled to Tauranga and Whangamata to take part in water skills courses. Another three groups set out for tramping trips into the Waipak-
ihi and Rangitikei rivers and the Tongariro National Park. The furthest away trip is taking students into the Abel Tasman National Park. The purpose of this week was to give students the opportunity to take part in new activities, to learn and develop new skills and to develop an interest in education outside the classroom. Some pupils have had to raise funds for their travel and accommodation expenses. Others have borrowed equipment from friends and relatives. They were under the supervision of staff and helpers from throughout the community. The small number of pupils who have remained to take part in College based activities are also able to take advantage of a variety of outdoor experiences including an overnight camp on the College grounds, barbecues and cycle trips. The college is able to offer a wide range of outdoor education opportunities using its well-qualified staff and with assistance from the community.
