Hapuawhenua bridge wins engineering award

The Hapuawhenua Rail Bridge has received honours in the New Zealand Concrete Society's 1988 Concrete Awards announced last week in Auckland.

The Award recognises the significant contribution the H a - puawhenua Railway Bridge makes to bridge engineering in New Zealand. Winning the Prestressed Concrete Award for the project were consulting engineers Beca Carter

Hollings & Ferner Ltd (BCHF). The company has also been awarded the Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand (ACENZ) 1988 Silver Merit Award for the Qhakune-Horopito project. The project involved the design of two rail bridges (one of which was 414m long) and the re-alignment of 7.5km of track between Ohakune and Horopito. The latest computeraided design technology (MOSS software) was used in the earthworks design phase. The Hapuawhenua Bridge is designed to withstand severe seismic shaking and is understood to be the largest cast-in-situ continuous prestressed bridge in New Zealand. 'Quake An earthquake was measured at 5.11 am Monday November 21 measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake was measured at Ohakune at a depth of 149 kilometres.
