TEACHERS' RENTS ADDING TO RAETIHI PROBLEMS
The problems in attracting teachers to Raetihi have been cited in the argument against market rentals for teacher housing in rural areas. Wanganui Education Board member John Gauld has said the board is writing to the Minister of Education David Lange highlighting the problems rural schools face. He said a teaching position in Raetihi was advertised five times before an appointment, prior to the market rentals regime. He said rentfree houses were offered to attract a doctor and a policeman to Raetihi and that the Ministry of Transport officer paid $52 per fortnight and Army personnel in Waiouru pay between $44 and $54 per fortnight. He said Raetihi teachers will pay up to $95 per week. Ohakune teachers are to be charged up to $110 per week. He told the board of the recent closure of Reynolds garage and Farmers trading store as well as the downgrading of the BNZ branch to an agency.
