$15,000 burglary

Audacious thieves broke into the offices of Spotless Catering in Clyde Street, Ohakune last week and stole the company' s safe and labour weekend takings - $15,000 in cash. The thieves broke into the back of the premises sometime on Monday night or Tuesday morning and dragged the safe out

the front door, which they forced from the inside. The offices are at the back of the Turoa Ski Academy building. Police believe the burglary may have taken place about 4.30am Tuesday because a neighbour reports hearing "a loud thump" at about that time. Police say very few people would have known about the safe and that the operation would have had to be well planned. A house opposite the offices was

found to have been broken into and police believe the thieves may have used the house to watch for the best time to carry out the burglary. The safe weighs about a tonne, is about a metre wide, high and deep and is a dark green colour. It will probably still be in the area somewhere, police believe. Police ask anyone who has seen the safe or who saw any suspicious activity around the Clyde Street offices to contact them.
