WHANGANUI FIRST, CENTRAL DISTRICTS ALL OUT, MANAWATU LAST

The name of the new region which will include the proposed Ruapehu District was the subject of debate at a recent Wanganui United Council meeting. The region was first mooted as "Central Districts", but the reeently released Local Government indicative proposal has called it the Manawatu -Wanganui Region. United Council opinions varied on the future name of the region, with Wanganui Mayor Chas Poynter suggesting Wanganui-Manawatu, because Wanganui is older and has a river and national park to give the region special identity. Rangitikei County Chairman Basil McLean said if Mr Poynter's idea was accepted Wanganui should include an "h". Waimarino Mayor Garrick Workman said "Central Districts" sounded like the name of a cricket tearn.
