UNEMPLOYED AND OLD MAN'S BEARD COULD DO BATTLE: MARSHALL
The unemployed could help to fight the battle to control Old Man's Beard (Clematis vitalba) through community work schemes, Rangitikei MP Dennis Marshall has suggested. He said the eradication of the vine, which is smothering forests in the Rangitikei area and has been found in the Waimarino, will be a labour intensive action. Local authorities in the Rangitikei-Manawatu regions are calling for Clematis vitalba to be classified as a Class B noxious weed. Mr Marshall has stated that there are many young unemployed people in the region who have indicated they would be interested in being part of a worthwhile project of this type. He said they are prepared to undertake work that contributes to the community if there are no jobs in the commercial sector.
