Ruapehu councils to meet

Waimarino mayor Garrick Workman, Councillor Doug Bennett and District Manager John Murrihy met with representatives of the Taumarunui Borough Council last Wednesday to discuss the administration of the future Ruapehu District. The discussion was an informal one and will be followed by meetings of all the amalgamating Ruapehu authorities. A meeting of the two Taumarunui councils, Waimarino District Council and Waiouru Community Council was last week being planned for Thursday October 27 or November 2. Waimarino Mayor Garrick Workman said the Local Govemment Commission wanted draft ward boundaries by November 10, which left very little time for the groups to consider the matter. He said the Ruapehu authorities would begin to share facilities before the actual amalgamation. It would be necessary for a district general manager to be appointed prior to the amalgamation, said Mr Workman. The manager would need to be involved in setting up the combined administration systems, he said.
