Hockey season deemed 'enjoyable'

A prize giving ceremony for the Raetihi Rebels Ladies Hockey Club was held last Saturday.

After a season full of hockey woes and wonders, Rebels agreed that despite the odd loss, it was An enjoyable playing season. Some of the disappointment during the year must go to games played under poor refereeing standards. While the local R u a p e h u Hockey Association is struggling to find referees with experience, a few of the more 'explosive' games were

marred by inept referring. Overall it was expressed that thanks go to the Association who were operating under difficult conditions, managed to arrange two rounds of hockey. Raetihi Rebels thank all opposition teams that fielded an ever improving player base, and made a pledge to tackle Ohakune's Ranger team next season. The prize giving was held at the Ruapehu Ho-

tel, Raetihi, where team members and associates enjoyed a champagne luncheon. The "Windle Cup" was presented to Charmaine Green, the most conscientious player, while the Patron, Mrs Gwen Birchall presented the 'Birchall Cup' for the most dedicated player to Enid Windle who also won the 'Compton Cup' for merit and fairness in hockey playing. The 'Carmicheal Tro-

phy' for the most improved player was awarded to Des Te Huia. Other prizes went to Mrs G. Birchall for best supporter, Waipare Probestal for stand-in goal keeping. Novelty cans were presented to Raywyn Rapana and John Compton (coach). Julie Oliver, an invited guest from Rangers, Ohakune, received a drinking award. Appreciation was expressed to the Innkeepers, Ray and Iris Parr for use of facilities durine the season. paetihi Rebel's successes this season include winning the closing day tournament and Teaching the top three hockey teams throughout the district competition.
