RIVER TRAVELLERS ACTIONS IRRESPONSIBLE

Six men who were rescued from the Wanganui River between Whakahoro and Pipiriki last week were irresponsible in their actions, according to the Department of Conservation. The men went into the area without signing the intentions book at Whakahoro, lost equipment including one canoe and a raft, and separated to leave the area. The men lost the equipment when they tried to lower it down a waterfall and a rope snapped. Conservation officer Ken Hunt said he thought it would have been wise to have someone at the bottom of the falls. Splitting up after that was also irresponsible, he said. Two of the men canoed down to Pipiriki and one walked out while the other three were found by rescuers.
