Dining atop

the Ohakune Club

Ohakune's newest restaurant is now up and running, offering prices among the lowest in the Waimarino.

The Ohakune Club restaurant, called Top o' the Club, is open to club members, associated club members and

bona fide guests on Thursday s, Fridays and Saturdays from 6.30pm and other nights by arrangement.

The 400 club members can enjoy bistro style meals, cooked by club manager Brian Dowsett. October 6 was the opening day for the 45 seat restaurant and so far the reception has been good, says Brian. Diners can enjoy bistro style meals with a roast of the day, a variety of steaks and fresh salads and vegetables included in the menu. All mains are under $10 with some as low as $7.50. Patrons will also be pleased to see the wine list which features all New Zealand wines, most under $10 per bottle. Brian Dowsett says he is the temporary chef, with Stephanie Whipp helping out. With the bistro style comes counter service,

where customers order and pick up their meals. Brian says this system reduces the number of staff needed and thus the cost of the meals. Brian Dowsett describes himself as a self taught cook, having worked at it for many years. He operated his own restaurant, the Lovin' Spoonful for four years and continues to cater for weddings, Christmas functions and the like. It was the Club Committee's decision to set up the restaurant, says Brian. He said it is quite common for working men's clubs and RSAs to have an in-house restaurant for the benefit of members. Setting up the restaurant involved some major alterations. Ohakune builder Rowan Eves was

the main contractor ror the work. Other people involved were Fetzer Electrical, Bill Samson, Horn Brothers, plumbers John Mclroy, painter and paper hanger James Inness. Suppliers include Gibson and Patterson who provided all the kitchen fittings such as food

warmers, ovens and dishwashers. Ohakune TV & Electrical supplied the refrigeration machinery and Hobday and Laurenson supplied the carpet and linoleum. Lion Breweries and Dominion Breweries continue to supply some of the 'vital ingredients' for a licensed restaurant.
