Five Department of Conservation staff are working their way along the Matemateaonga Track in the Whanganui National Park this week in final preparation for the summer influx of visitors to the region. The staff - three from Pipiriki Ranger Station and another two from Taranaki are also investigating recent vandalism to the Ongarue Hut, where it was discovered that the door was knocked off its hinges.
