Pulp effluent

Winstone Pulp International's application to pump pulp effluent into the Whangaehu River has received five submissions. The company wants to renew an existing water right that allows it to discharge up to 5609 cubic metres of treated pulp mill effluent into the river. Submissions have come from the River City Canoe Club in Wanganui, the Ruahine

White Water Club, Department of Conservation, the Maruia Society and one Wanganui resident. Submissions concerned the colour of the discharge and a foaming problem. Winstones. has been investigating methods of improving the nature of the discharge in the Whangaehu River, which is naturally acidic because of its origins at the crater lake.
