Plunket's annual appeal for funds here soon

Once again Plunket volunteers will soon be out in force collecting for their annual Appeal. They will arrive on most householder's doorsteps sometime between Saturday 15 to Monday, October 1 7 ,

1988. The collectors are not just there to take your donation, they will also remind you that Plunket is still. very strong in this area but that they do need your support to remain strong and caring. All the money col-

lected within the Waimarino is kept and spent within the area, therefore the area benefits from your support. Last year, the final figure for collections was $1442, up from $1234 the year before that. Donations may be left

at the Plunket rooms or at your local chemist if not collected. The Plunket Society aims to improve the health and well-being of New Zealand parents and their children, with special reference t o mothers both before

and after childbirth, and to children up to school age. In a baby's first year, it currently costs local Plunket nearly $60 to maintain Plunket Services. This amount does not include the Plunket Nurse's salary.

The Govemment determines the number of Plunket Nurses employed as it allocates funding to cover the salaries of a set number of nurses. About 417 full and part-time Plunket Nurses are employed by the Plunket

Society. The Govemment also gives a grant towards the price of new cars. All running costs of clinics, cars, Karitane, branch activities and the balance of new car costs are met through local fundraising. Plunket volunteers either fundraise or ask for donations, they do not charge for the Plunket service. Last year, both Raetihi and Ohakune contributed nearly $4500 each- to cover expenses.
