Videos now labelled
The Video Association of New Zealand is urging parents to ensure that young children watch only those videos which are labelled for general viewing. A video labelling system was introduced last October, and by the end of 1988 every
video available for hire in the country will carry a label which advises its suitability for audience viewing. The coloured labels are based on a traffic light concept, where green indicates videos suitable for all ages and yellow stickers advise parents to "proceed with caution."
The labels have been mandatory on all new videos since last October and retailers are about half-way through labelling existing videos. A large number o f visitors to the Ruapehu region rent video tapes and recorders from the eight outlets in Ohakune and Raetihi.
