LOST, JADED SKIER EATS ROOTS AND LEAVES

Lost and found Auckland skier says his enthusiasm for skiing has waned after walking halfway from Turoa to Karioi. James Atley was the subject of a major search recently after he got lost in white-out conditions on the mountain. He advises skiers to always go in pairs at least. That way he would have been "less likely to veer off" and get lost, he said. Mr Atley was forced to spend a cold night crouchcd under a tree stump below the ski field. He said he ate leaves and fern roots because he thought he might be lost in the dcnsc bush of Rangataua Sate Forest for days.
