Social services benefit by cash

Funds totalling $95,640.80 have been made available to the Waimarino Rangitikei Community Organisations Grants Scheme Local Distribution Committee for disbursement to local community groups and organisations providirig essential social services. To date 40 applications for this year's funds have been received and dealt with by the committee. The Kaupapa of Community Organisations Grants Scheme is to successfully promote a community's identity and values as a way of reaching social, cultural and economic equality. The scheme is supportive to women; the socially disadvantaged including our elderly, youth, disabled (both mentally and physically); unemployed; family and children support services; Maori arid Pacific Island c o m m u n i ties and people. The Distribution Committee, made up of people chosen from the local communities within the Waimarino Rangitikei, area have made the following grants. Taihape Budgeting Service $500.00; Tai-

hape Senior Citizens $500.00; St Johns Ambulance, Hunterville $2000.00; Mowawhango Marae $4000.00; Te Kopu Rangomaraeroa, Waiouru $3000.00; Rangitikei Plunket Society $1000.00; T e Koopu Rangatahi Tautoko T a i h a p e $3000.00; Rata Marae $5000.00; Ratana St Johns $2500.00; Waimarino Plunket $1000.00; Raetihi Senior Citizens $500.00; Raetihi Country Womens Institute $350.00; Taihape Maori Wardens $2600.00; Waimarino Community Advice Committee $500.00; Raetihi Social Services $1000.00; Maungarongo Marae Trustees $8000.00; Busy Bees, Marton $500.00; Kaumatua Kaunihera, Taihape $1500.00; Hinemanu Marae $4000.00; La Leche League, Waiouru $500.00; Taihape CAB $500.00; Mangaweka Country Womens Institute $300.00; St Johns Ambulance, Taihape $1000.00. Grants approved were in the main for salaries, training, travel, hui development costs, volunteer expenses and co-ordina-tion. Many worthwhile proposals have not re-

ceived funds in the first round of allocations and this does not prevent them from applying for assistance in the future. Again it has been difficult for the COGS Committee to make its decisions and before groups can apply for further COGS funds they must account for previous grants received. The Committee see this request as an im-

portant aspect for groups to be accountable back to there communities. Applications are now being called for this year's final round of funding. Applications will close on Friday, September 30, 19 8 8 and may be addressed to the COGS Worker, Department of Social Welfare, Private Bag, Wanganui.
