Marton take away second place chance
Ohakune Karioi went down in gallant defeat in the last Club game this season against Marton Old Boys. They knew they couldn't win the competition but could come out runners up if they took the game, but it was not to be.
The game was played on a very muddy and pudgy ground in front of a small crowd with rain falling throughout. The first half was played in Marton territory with the local team doing most of the attacking. Unfortunately they were too eager and were penalised many times for
off side play and knock ons. The half time score of three-all changed dramatically in the first 10 minutes into the second half. From kick off John Hainsworth ran through the Ohakune Karioi defence for the first try of the game which was not converted.
Tom Walker, one of;the five replacements Marton put on the field, scored another try in the corner which was converted making the score 13.3. The writing was on the wall for Ohakune Karioi and to make things worse they lost their captain Steve Tipene half way through the second half. He was showing great leadership through the pressure his team was under. Ohakune Karioi were determined to secure
more points and kept fighting back. There reward came in the dying stages with an excellent try to Kelleck Harding. The final score was Marton Old Boys 21, Ohakune Karioi 10. Credit must go to Bruce Cranston and Lachlan Harding for the
way they coached the team through the championship round this season. The three top point scores for the Ohakune team this season are Lachlan and Kellick Harding and Steve Cameron. Presentation of trophies will be on
September 24 a t OKRSC starting with a dinner. Tickets are $20, available from Rex Oliver. Points from Saturday's game were: John Hainsworth 2 trys, Tom Walker 1 try, Paul McCleese 1 try, Kelvin Chase 1 penalty and 1 conversion and for Ohakune Karioi: Kel-
lick Harding a try and one penalty. After Saturday's game the team enjoyed an end-of-season celebration at Lachlan and Kerry Harding's home. This final report, as with all the 1988 Ohakune Karioi rugby reports was written by Barbara Harding.
