Drivers' speed wastes time
"Snow blind" skiers travelling to the Ruapehu region at excessive speeds are worrying Ministry of Transport and police. Skiers speeding is an annual problem that has returned along with good ski conditions on Mt Ruapehu, according to law enforcement officers. The worst aspect of it is that speeding does not get skiers on the slopes any sooner, say officers. "The majority of skiers arrive in the region on a Friday night and can't get to the skifields until Saturday moming but seem to think that if they drive twice the allowed speed, they will get there sooner." Taumarunui Police say over the years skiers have been involved in numerous tragic accidents in their area. Many pay the price of speeding with their lives or else suffer serious injury, but still do not listen to advice. According to one traffic officer, some people apparently smell the snow and then get "all excited."
